Relaxation
relaxation is releasing the hold on the moment to find ease in the body - so that the flow of birth to take over.
Relax
One crucial aspect for anyone preparing for childbirth is relaxation. This can be surprising, as most people associate childbirth primarily with 'labour'.
In our busy lives, it can be easy to overlook this essential practice, but when it comes to birthing, finding ease in our bodies can truly make a world of difference.
Relaxation doesn’t always come naturally, especially since we are hardwired to react to stress and threats. That’s where HypnoBirthing comes in. It teaches us how to access deep states of relaxation so that, on the big day, our muscles can let go of tension, allowing our bodies to perform their natural functions with greater ease.
When unexpected situations arise—like a breech presentation or a new doctor walking in—being able to remain calm and relaxed can be a game-changer. Staying connected with your body creates a comfortable environment for the birthing process, no matter what surprises come your way.
The science behind relaxation is compelling:
when we relax, our bodies release oxytocin and endorphins. Oxytocin, often referred to as the “love hormone,” flourishes when we feel safe and connected, while endorphins serve as our natural pain relief. Together, these chemicals play a significant role in facilitating the birthing process. More on that in a future post.
On the other hand, stress triggers the release of adrenaline and cortisol—hormones that can slow or inhibit labor. While these hormones are great for responding quickly to threats, they can hinder the natural flow of childbirth. Unlike animals that instinctively know how to relax and restart labour if there’s an interruption or perceived threat in the environment, we often find ourselves disconnected from our bodies and stuck in our heads.
To fully embrace the flow of birth, we need to prioritize relaxation.
This involves releasing physical and emotional tension, creating space for ease and surrender. The journey to mastering relaxation is a process that requires patience and practice, especially in a fast-paced society that encourages us to push and force things.
In the five weeks of my HypnoBirthing series, I invite you to join me on a journey of relaxation. This is a safe, supportive space where we can explore what it means to relax and let go. It’s important to acknowledge that this process can sometimes feel vulnerable and uncomfortable, but knowing you are in a safe environment is part of the healing journey.
Together, we won’t just be learning; we will be working in partnership to help you rediscover your incredible ability to birth, heal, and connect—not just during this special time, but for the journey ahead.
